Straight From the GHS Band Director

Parents and Students,

Thank you to everyone for making Band Camp a huge success. I am very excited about the season and the accomplishments our students have already reached. If you were unable to attend the parent meeting, please email me and I will get an information packet home to you. Also, please let me know ASAP if you want to order a sweatshirt or polo shirt. I will need to order extras very soon to have them in time for the season.

A very big thank you to the parents that volunteered their time throughout the week to help with the students. We would not have been able to do it without you.

Please keep your students practicing this week and have them ready for school on August 24th. Our first day of afterschool rehearsals will be August 25th. Check the calendar you received in your packets as to when the rehearsals will be. This calendar is also available online a http://www.gainesvillehighschoolband.com/.

Be sure to join us at our first football game at Citizen's Field on Thursday, September 3rd.

Thanks again to everyone,

Bill Pirzer

Pizza, Hamburgers, Hotdogs & Bring Your Own

Some last minute details concerning meals this week and the parents meeting on Friday:

Tuesday: Pizza will be available for dinner Tuesday night for $2 cheese or $2.50 pepperoni

Wednesday: Gator Dockside has generously volunteered to provide Wednesday night dinner to our campers. It will bring its delicious hotdogs, hamburgers, either blackbean patties or vegi wraps for those who do not eat meat, and chips and drinks. Our volunteer coordinator could use some extra parents to coordinate/serve the Wednesday night meal. Dinner will be delivered to GHS at 5:00 p.m.

Friday: We hope that all student families can join us for our annual family night dinner and meeting. The agenda covers important band information that you don't want to miss. Dinner is a bring-your-own picnic-style meal. Dress code is casual, and you can even pick up a couple of GHS Hurricane Band T-shirts and caps. Entertainment is provided by your proud campers as they wrap up the evening with a sneak peek of the 2009-2010 award winning, heart thumping, best marching band show ever!

Thank you to all the wonderful parents who volunteered to make Band Camp I and Band Camp II successful. We couldn't do this without all of you.

An Update from Mr. Pirzer

Check out the freshly updated GHS Hurricane website for all the details and to print out the band calendar, required medical forms, band camp II daily details and for information on camp fees at http://gainesvillehighschoolband.com/ - select the Marching Band tab.

  • Band Camp II will begin on Saturday, August 8th from 9am to 9pm and then on Monday, August 10th - 14th from 9am to 9pm.
  • First Parents Meeting will be held Friday, August 14th, at 6:30 p.m. following the family night dinner and ending with a sneak preview of the 2009 GHS Hurricane Marching Band show!
  • Drill will be available Wednesday for the show and pregame.

From the Band Director: Please be on time for all band camp sessions. Band members should wear a white or mostly white t-shirt, black shorts, socks (these are required and students won't be allowed to march without them), athletic shoes and their instrument, if applicable.

Since they'll be outside for a good part of the day, they should also bring a large thermos of water, sunscreen, a cap or visor and bug spray. Bring a lunch each day but avoid including candies or anything that can melt or spoil easily. No milk or dairy since it could upset their stomachs in the heat.

Donations of snack crackers, granola bars, bananas, apples and powdered Gatorade are needed for Band Camp II. The kids can really work up an appetite when practicing their new show and they really love those granola bars! You can drop off your donations at the GHS Band Room beginning in August but check back here before you do that to make sure someone will be there to receive.

Don't forget about the camp fees and medical forms. Link to GHS Hurricane website http://gainesvillehighschoolband.com/, for printable PDF's of calendar, Band Camp II information and medical forms.
